We wanted to share a great story with you…
Once upon a time when I was about 7 years old I had an Uncle who wore a toupee. You might ask how a child of only 7 knew that he was wearing a toupee but it was as clear as the rug on our floor....or more aptly put...the rug on his head! Every time I saw him the toupee looked different and it never failed to make me stare. My Mom would pull me aside and tell me that it wasn’t polite to stare but I couldn’t help myself. He looked like his head was misshapen and one time it even blew off in our backyard when the wind blew.
Many of us want our hair to look as fantastic as the celebrities that we see on the various Red Carpets at award shows and in our magazines. Of course, we don’t all have a crew of stylists at our beck and call, but we can ask our personal hair stylists to copy what we perceive as the perfect “do”. Sometimes that works out and sometimes not. It is up to the experienced cosmetologist to guide us past our fantasies and into a more realistic approach to which celebrity would best match our own particular features, face shape and hair type.
We have been noticing a lot of ads for vitamins and other hair growth products online, on television and in magazines. As a potential client, you are probably wondering if these solutions really work.
I recently visited my local hair salon and my hair stylist told me that my hair was dry, I had split ends, sun damage and a myriad of other problems. She was not a qualified hair restoration specialist so she didn’t ask me what medications I take or what kind of diet I maintain (if any), if I have any health problems or much of anything else except her pronouncements about the condition of my hair (which I had figured out for myself). After all, I do have mirrors in my house and I can see small piles of hair that I am leaving in my wake.
As I have mentioned, I do not have severe hair loss. I have experienced thinning hair since I am both a senior citizen , take some medications that can cause hair loss, struggle with diet and exercise. But I can control some of those causes.
First, find the cause. Determine if it’s a medical condition and check your medications. For example, medications for the treatment of cancer, depression, heart disease, arthritis and high blood pressure can contribute to thinning hair and hair loss.
It is rare to simply wake up one day and find that you have no hair. Hair loss is usually a gradual process unless a disease is present or you have undergone chemotherapy treatments.

This is the story of a young woman we will call Melody for this story... Melody finally reached her weight loss goals and was thrilled, but soon after she began to notice that her hair was falling out. She had heard this could happen, so she did not panic at first. Rather she began using over the counter supplements and other hair products products that she could buy from her local grocery store, but in the end none of them really seem to work.
September is Alopecia Awareness Month. Many people ask me what is alopecia exactly? The word alopecia itself is the medical term for hair loss. It does not refer to one specific form of hair loss. Any form of hair loss is alopecia. I’ve been helping people young and old with various types of alopecia for decades. I’ve seen it all. There are a few distinct categories of alopecia. Let me break down a few of them.
